Trinidad or Tobago? Choosing where to stay

Choose Trinidad for Carnival, food, nightlife, culture and day trips into rainforest and wetlands. Choose Tobago for beaches, snorkelling, diving and a slower pace. Many visitors do both: the islands are about a 25-minute flight apart.

Staying in Trinidad

Port of Spain is the base for most visitors. Woodbrook and Ariapita Avenue have the restaurants and nightlife; St. Clair, Newtown and St. Ann's are quieter and close to the Queen's Park Savannah. From the city you can reach Maracas Bay on the north coast, the Chaguaramas peninsula, the Asa Wright Nature Centre in the Northern Range, and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, known for scarlet ibis at sunset.

Staying in Tobago

Crown Point, at the south-west tip near the airport, has the easiest access to Store Bay and Pigeon Point and the most places to eat. Castara is a small fishing village on the north coast with a relaxed feel. Speyside, at the north-east end, is the base for diving and trips to Little Tobago. Scarborough is the capital and the ferry port.

Getting between the islands

Book inter-island seats early around Carnival, Easter and Tobago's festival periods, when demand is highest.

Doing both

A common plan: Carnival week in Port of Spain, then three or four nights in Tobago to recover on the beach. On HostLeed you can book each stay with a verified local host and see the full price, including fees, before you pay.
