The best areas to stay
Woodbrook
West of downtown Port of Spain, home to Ariapita Avenue's bars and restaurants. Lively at night, walkable to many pre-Carnival events, and a short drive or longer walk to the Savannah. Good if you want to be in the middle of things; light sleepers should ask the host about street noise.
St. Clair and Newtown
Leafy streets right beside the Queen's Park Savannah, the main stage for Carnival judging. Quieter than Woodbrook and walkable to the Savannah, which makes them a favourite for masqueraders who want to walk back after a long day on the road.
St. Ann's and Cascade
Residential, hilly areas on the north-east side of the Savannah. Cooler evenings and views; you'll usually want a car or taxi.
Maraval
A valley a few minutes north-west of the Savannah by car, on the road to Maracas Bay. Calmer, with more houses and family-sized places, and an easy escape to the beach on Ash Wednesday.
Further out: Diego Martin, Westmoorings, Chaguaramas
Larger homes and better value, but plan for traffic on Carnival days. Fine if you have a car and don't mind driving in.
When to book
Book as early as you can. Places near the Savannah are the first to go, and prices for Carnival week are well above the rest of the year. If you are travelling in a group, a whole house in Maraval or St. Ann's often costs less per person than several hotel rooms.
What to ask a host before you pay
- Minimum nights and check-in time for Carnival week.
- Water tank and backup power. Ask if the place has a water tank and a generator or backup.
- Air conditioning in every bedroom, not just the living room.
- Parking and road closures near the Savannah and parade routes.
- Distance to the Savannah on foot, and whether it's safe to walk at night.
- Space for costumes, and somewhere to wash off J'ouvert paint.
Getting there
International flights land at Piarco International Airport (POS), east of Port of Spain. The drive into the city is usually 30 to 45 minutes, and much longer at peak times. Ask your host whether they can recommend a trusted airport driver.
